This year’s fifteen celebrities took to the dancefloor tonight to face judges Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and new judge Motsi Mabuse.

At the end of the night, it was Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher who topped the leaderboard.

A last minute addition to the line up after Jamie Laing’s exit, Kelvin’s Samba with pro partner Oti Mabuse was branded “electrifying” by Shirley and “amazing” by Craig Revel Horwood.

It scored the best marks of the opening night with 32 points out of a possible 40.

Others who did well in the opening weekend were Karim and Amy, who won 31 points with a Cha Cha that was described as a “tour de force” by Bruno while Craig said he “loved it”.

Also getting their Strictly journey off on the right foot were Radio 1 DJ Dev Griffin and Drag Race judge Michelle Visage who performed a Foxtrot and Cha Cha respectively to score 30 points apiece.

At the other end of the leaderboard, James Cracknell and Luba Mushtuk left us with plenty to remember with their Tango to Gold by Spandau Ballet.

They scored just 11 points in total – with Craig awarding only two points – after the routine.

Also finding themselves at the wrong end of the leaderboard was Chris Ramsey.

Chris was praised for his intention and determination but criticism for his lack of timing and awkward movements left him with just thirteen points.

Fortunately for James and Chris, they’ll have the chance to boost their marks next weekend.

As usual, there was no public vote or elimination this first weekend but the judges’ scores will carry forward to Week 2 where they’ll be added to the marks for their second routines.

Week 2 will then see the public given their first chance to vote this year, with viewer votes combined with the judges’ marks to decide which celebs face the dance off.

Then the first celebrity will be eliminated in the Sunday results show.
