Strictly Come Dancing scores best ratings ever against The X Factor

Strictly Come Dancing 2017 - TX12 LIVE SHOW

Strictly Come Dancing's viewing figures for 2017 have been the best in its 14 year history.

The current series has averaged 11 million viewers to date, a record breaking number.

Last Sunday's results show saw more than 11.1 million viewers, the highest overnight rating of the series so far.

This Saturday is the final and numbers are tipped to smash last year's figure of 13 million.

Back in September, 15 celebrities entered the ballroom for the very first time, but only four have made the final.

The last of this year's Strictly shows promises to make for a dramatic night of dance as the couples battle it out in the ballroom for the very last time.

The couples will dance three routines - their favourite, the judges' choice, and a spectacular show-dance - in a bid to win the viewers' votes and the 2017 Glitter Ball trophy.

Strictly's success comes as its Saturday night rival X Factor dropped to a new low.

Stats out this week show that the last run of the ITV singing show was watched by an average audience of 6.3 million viewers.

This includes those watching on the night and catching up in the seven days after.

That's down 1.3 million viewers on last year's series on average and the sixth consecutive yearly decline from the show's peak in 2010.

Since then the show has lost more than half its audience, as an average of 13 million viewers tuned in each weekend to watch the likes of One Direction, Cher Lloyd and Wagner seven years ago.

The first series of The X Factor in 2004 averaged 7.4 million viewers, with last year's run the first to dip below that figure.
