Debbie McGee has got a very unlikely fan in the race to win Strictly Come Dancing.

British prime minister Theresa May has said she's "cheering on" Debbie, who is one of her constituents.

But ever the politician, May added this week: "Alexandra Burke is also very good, but one or two of the men seem to be quite dark horses too.

"So it is a good quality competition this year."

Having the backing of the PM is sure to be good news for Debbie, who has reportedly been struggling in rehearsals for Saturday night.

"Debbie is struggling and it all got too much for her," a source told The Sun newspaper today. "She’s finding practice increasingly difficult to get through and Gio isn’t going easy on he

They added: "He’s desperate to win and is pushing Debbie but some days she’s exhausted.

"Perhaps he forgets sometimes that Debbie is a lot older than her competitors."

This weekend will see a musicals themed special and the pressure is on with the final later this month.

Mollie King is the current favourite to go while Debbie last lost her place as the tip to win following a slump in her scores.

Joe McFadden instead goes into the quarter-finals as the new favourite to take home the Glitterball trophy.

The Holby City star was slashed from 7/2 to the joint 12/5 favourite alongside Debbie McGee after he topped the leaderbaord last weekend, but Debbie has since been eased out to 11/4 seeing him head the betting alone.

Aoife Heffron, Spokeswoman for BoyleSports commented "Joe McFadden has taken over as the favourite to win after Debbie McGee drifted out to 11/4 from her joint 12/5 favourite status alongside Joe. He has certainly shown the most progression in his performances each week and is set for a Samba this weekend, which is beneficial as he performs better with up-tempo dances.”

Strictly Come Dancing 2017 airs Saturday and Sunday night on BBC One.
