The Drop: New streetwear competition comes to BBC Three

The Drop start date and celebrities revealed

The Drop is the new streetwear competition series coming to BBC Three.

The BBC say the new format “is here to capture the cultural synergy between fashion, music, sport, celebrity and business and to provide one individual with a life-changing prize”.

The Drop will see 9 of Britain’s most promising up-and-coming creatives go head to head to win the chance to have their new streetwear brand stocked in a major UK retailer.

The creatives will be mentored by two influential judges and complete themed weekly challenges that help them develop their brand.

Clara Amfo is to host the series with world-renowned designers Marc Jacques Burton and Blondey as series judges, joined by Head Judge and Consulting Executive, artist Miguel.

The special guests appearing across the series include comedian, writer and actor, Asim Chaudery; YouTuber, Dan TDM; UK skateboarder, Dogger; singer-songwriter, Ella Eyre; rapper and singer, Headie One; footballer and content creator, Jeremy Lynch and grime MC and producer, JME.

They’ll be joined by singer and Pussycat Dolls star, Kimberly Wyatt; singer-songwriter, Mahalia; founder and CEO of Hope Fashion, Nayna McIntosh; radio host and TV personality, Roman Kemp; UK skateboarder, Savannah Keenan and rapper, singer and songwriter, Wretch 32.

The Drop will air across eight episodes on BBC Three and iPlayer from Monday, 14 March, 2022 at 9PM.

Miguel said: “I really hadn’t ever contemplated doing something like this, but when I met the Renowned [the show’s production company] team and discovered their works I was immediately excited to get involved, both on air and behind the scenes as a co-producer.

“I also love that this show will be UK-centric, as there are so many talented designers based in the territory who deserve recognition.”

Marc Jacques Burton commented: “It was always my dream to have a clothing brand. I have had so many valuable lessons, through my journey in creating MJB. I cannot wait to mentor the Creatives of The Drop and help them shine.

“It’s going to be a fun ride with Miguel and Blondey. It will be interesting to see what we agree and disagree on. I hope the show helps ignite a new wave of streetwear designers.”

Blondey added: “I’m not entirely sure what Miguel was thinking and/or drinking when he asked me to participate in The Drop, but I am glad that he did! I have no doubt that the show will be an inspiring one to have a hand in creating, and that the talent who are to do so (both on-screen and off) will make it an inspiring one to watch.”

Clara Amfo said: “I’m so excited to be presenting The Drop – clothing and in particular streetwear have been a constant passion of mine, so to marry that with this role is a dream come true! There is so much design talent in the UK that inspires the world over and I can’t wait for the audience and hopefully future fans of these creatives to see what they bring to the table!”

Fiona Campbell, Controller BBC Three, added: “At BBC Three, we love opportunities where we can provide a platform for people to express their creativity and passions.

“The Drop promises to be a fresh, new competitive format that delves into the business of streetwear and we’re really looking forward to seeing what the creatives come up with.”
