The Great British Bake Off 2019 winner has been confirmed – who won the series tonight?
It was the last show of the series this evening as the remaining three bakers went head to head.
There were a trio of brand new challenges for the finalists this evening before the winner was decided.
Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were back to set the tasks, pass judgement and ultimately determine who won the Great British Bake Off tonight.
And after 10 weeks, it was David Atherton who was named the Great British Bake Off winner 2019.
The 36-year-old International Health Adviser from London competed in the final alongside 28-year-old Alice Fevronia from London and 28-year-old Shop Assistant from Chester Steph Blackwell from London.
David was left in tears as he was congratulated on his win. He reacted: “I’ve watched this for nine years, day dreaming about being on Bake Off.
“It wasn’t even in my mind that I could win this.
“I was always the underdog, just getting to the final was a win for me. This is unreal.”
Reflecting on making the decision between the final three, Bake Off judge Paul said: “Some of them are on par with the best bakers ever.
“Certainly from my point of view this year was the hardest judging I’ve ever done. It all relied a lot on the showstopper and not necessarily on challenge one and two.”
“David is an extraordinary baker. I’ve had a lot of admiration for him,” added Prue, comparing his victory to the tortoise and the hare: “He steadily went on and won.”
In the final, Paul and Prue set three challenges that tested every aspect of the bakers’ skills.
In a classic Signature the bakers had the chance to show if their chocolate cake was worthy of winning before the bakers’ efforts with a soufflĂ© were under the microscope in the Technical.
It was then onto the final day where the bakers’ friends and families gathered outside the tent alongside all of the eliminated contestants.
The last marathon challenge lasted four and a half hours as Prue and Paul asked for a stunning visual illusion showstopper using only cake, sweet bread and biscuits.
The three finalists went all out to get themselves the title – perhaps pushing things a little too far.
Once time was up, it was over to Prue and Paul to taste before announcing the winner of the Great British Bake Off.
