Joe Lycett to host new BBC One Saturday night gameshow ‘The Time It Takes’

Players will face quiz questions during a variety of wacky and silly tasks

Comedian Joe Lycett is to present a new BBC One gameshow in which players race to answer quiz questions during a variety of weird and wacky tasks.


The broadcaster is aiming to liven up Saturday nights with new entertainment format ‘The Time It Takes’.

Contestants will have their knowledge put to the test over four rounds.

The twist is that they can control how much time they get to answer questions – by choosing from a selection of silly tasks.

Examples include fully unwrapping a bag of Werther’s Originals, solving a Rubik’s Cube underwater and deflating an air bed.

As the name suggests, they’ll have however long their preferred challenge lasts to score as many points as they can.

Winners will be rewarded with a dream holiday, while losers will take home a tea towel as a consolation prize.


Joe – a favourite on panel shows like 8 Out Of 10 Cats – will be assisted by a yet-to-be-named ‘referee’.

In addition, several celebrity guests will pop up to complete some of the tasks.

Joe joked: “Never before has so much relied on someone knowing how long a kettle takes to boil.

“The Time It Takes is one of the most brilliantly daft shows I’ve ever been involved in – and that’s saying something.”

Jimmy Mulville, managing director of production company Hat Trick, said: “The Time It Takes is a brilliant format which is brought to life by the hugely talented Joe Lycett.

“It’s both exciting and funny – just what you want at tea-time on Saturdays.”

“The Time It Takes is very funny and incredibly silly,” added series producer Meriel Beale. “Happily, so is Joe Lycett.

“I’ve no doubt his warm, generous wit will be lapped up by BBC One viewers.”

An eight-episode series of The Time It Takes will begin on BBC One later this year.


The news comes days after Channel 4 commissioned Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back, an advice show hosted by the comic.

Inspired by his hilarious complaint letters, it will see Joe help the British public solve their own consumer woes.
