ITV2 is reportedly plotting a dramatic Love Island Christmas special reuniting the show’s couples – after most of them split.
The broadcaster has so far resisted calls from fans to air a second edition of the reality smash over winter.
However, while the next full series remains a while off, bosses are now drawing up a plan to capitalise on the show’s success over the festive period.
According to The Sun, ITV2 is set to air a one-off Love Island reunion special at Christmas.
It will likely use the format of spin-off Aftersun, and could even be filmed at the show’s famous Majorca villa.
All of the cast members from this year’s record-breaking fourth series will be invited to take part – even though several couples have broken up since it ended.
“Bosses have been wanting to get the cast back together for a few years now but have finally been given the green light because of the success of this year’s show,” said the newspaper’s source.
“They know exactly the kind of drama that viewers want to see. Getting together the couples who have split will certainly make for tense viewing.
“Producers are in the process of getting people to sign up and they are hoping that everybody agrees to it.”
Sam Bird and Georgia Steel became the latest Love Islanders to call it quits last week amid allegations of cheating.
Charlie Brake and Ellie Brown, Laura Anderson and Paul Knops, and Jack Fowler and Laura Crane have also uncoupled.
Should any of them choose not to get involved in TV drama, producers have a contingency plan.
They’re also considering welcoming some familiar faces from past series back for the special.
“Lots of ideas have been floated around including bringing back some of the old stars,” The Sun’s mole added.
ITV previously brought the islanders together in August for a live meet-and-greet show at London’s ExCel.
Recently it was announced that Love Island’s Wes Nelson will compete on the new series of Dancing On Ice.
