Roman Kemp has spoken about his famous relatives on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.
In tonight’s episode, Roman discussed his family after Kate revealed that she used to have Spandau Ballet posters on her wall.
“I really love your dad,” she said of Roman’s father Martin Kemp. “I don’t know if I’ve ever told him. He was my absolute favourite.”
“My dad is my best mate. 100%. I speak to him every day” said Roman .
Roman revealed that his parents got together aged 22: “My mum’s first boyfriend was Andrew Ridgely. To my knowledge, my mum’s only ever kissed two people in her life.”
He continued: “My mother always said that she said to George Michael at a party that she was going to marry him. (Roman’s father)”
“They were at some party and she didn’t want to speak to him (Martin) and one of George’s friends brought him over and they started talking and my dad gave my mum his phone number and my mum went back to George’s house and George forced my mum to call him.
“But their first date, George went with them. My mum didn’t want to go on her own. They went to see Sade at the Camden Palace. My dad spent the whole date trying to get rid of him.”
Roman talked about George Michael, his godfather who he referred to as an uncle.
He shared: “He was an amazing guy… You’d see him at dinners, Christmas, the lot. It is really nice that all the memories I gave are so nice, going on holidays, and having my parents compete with Christmas presents.
“One year, I must have been 4 or 5 and my dad bought me a bike, a Raleigh bike. I remember George came round to the house and brought in my present and he’d gone to Harrods and bought one of those electric cars but not just that, it was a batmobile. I’ve still got it.
“Memories like that, they’re so nice to have but it’s strange because for me it was just my mum’s best mate.”
Meanwhile, Roman said that his father couldn’t play an instrument or sing when he first started in the band. “He still can’t. He still hasn’t realised his mic wasn’t on for Live Aid” he joked.
“When they went back on tour, post brain tumour and stuff like that, he forgot everything. So he forgot how to play and he forgot all the songs. He knew how to play but he didn’t know any of the songs. So I had to learn them and then teach him. I learnt all the Spandau songs and then retaught them to him.
“That thing. All it did was make us like this (close). Like super close. How can my dad not be my hero through all of that. We’re a proper unit.”
