I’m A Celebrity 2017 campmates race across the Australian bush in ‘battle of the sexes’

Dennis and Jamie play for the boys while Becky and Shappi represent the girls

The boys were pit against the girls on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! yesterday as they embarked on an epic race across the Australian outback.

Previously, the campmates were told they’d split in to gender-based teams for a battle to win a slap-up feast in Snake Rock.

Each side had to pick two players to take part in a ‘race against the elements’. The boys chose Dennis Wise and Jamie Lomas, while the girls picked Rebekah Vardy and Shappi Khorsandi.

While they made their way to a jungle helipad, the rest of the celebs competed in yesterday’s live Bushtucker Trial, ‘Ant and Dec’s Jungle Takeaway’.

Both teams were confident of victory, with the boys’ Iain Lee boasting: “I think we’ve got a very strong team. Dennis has played for his country and Jamie is very focussed. I think we’re going to smash the women.”

The girls’ Vanessa White said: “There’s a lot at stake today. Obviously we want this massive feast tonight. We’ve just got to put in 100%.”

Eventually, the boys won the Trial by six points to three. This meant Dennis and Jamie got a head-start on the race, leaving immediately in their helicopter.

The news disappointed Becky, who snapped: “They let us down massively. I’m literally fuming.”

However, the WAG vowed to “channel my irritation to determination” as the second chopper arrived to ferry them to the starting point.

Meanwhile, Dennis and Jamie landed at their destination, where they found backpacks, boxes, supplies, and instructions.

“Celebrities, you are now in a race against the elements to return to camp,” a laminate said. “The only way back is by helicopter, but it will only return when you signal it.”

The players’ objective was to construct a flag from pieces scattered across the Aussie outback.

To find the missing bits, they had to complete three challenges inspired by the elements air, fire and water.

Meanwhile, the other celebrities back at base camp had another chance to win an advantage by conquering the earth element.

The first team to summon their helicopter with the flag would win the delicious feast, leaving the losers on basic rations.

First, the racers faced their fire challenge, which involved them using flint and kindling to start a fire.

They could then use the flame to light candles along a darkened crevasse, which led to the first sections of the flags.

The boys soon got hold of their piece, while the girls suffered another setback when Shappi lost her helmet, only to realise it was at the bottom of her rucksack.

“We don’t know if we were in front or behind, but we’ve really got to push on,” Becky said. “Hopefully we won’t lose again to those boys.”
