Great British Bake Off spoilers: New series breaks with tradition for opening episode

The Great British Bake Off 2018 starts tonight and here are some first spoilers from the new series.

Restaurateur, food writer and novelist Prue Leith will be joining Paul Hollywood as judge of The Great British Bake Off when it returns to screens tonight on Channel 4.

Prue and Paul will be joined by GBBO hosts Sandi Toksvig OBE and Noel Fielding for their second series together.

They’ll be ready with a pertinent pep talk, a helpful hand or just a sympathetic shoulder to cry on, for what is series 9 of the cooking competition.

Over the next 10 weeks, 12 of the best amateur bakers in Britain will whisk, knead, ice, beat and bake their way through classic British cakes, perfect patisserie, Danish delights, sticky caramel constructions and elaborate layered puddings.

All 12 will be hoping to impress with their skill, creativity, knowledge and passion to clinch the Bake Off Crown with 30 challenges carefully designed by judges Paul and Prue standing in their way.

Tonight, breaking with tradition, the series snubs Cakes for its first week and instead kicks off with Biscuit Week.

The bakers tackle signature biscuits that will say something both about them and a place in the British Isles.

Next the bakers face their first Technical, and hiding under the gingham cloth is one of Paul’s childhood favourites – an iconic biscuit that’s sure to send the bakers round in circles.

Finally, it’s crunch time. The bakers will have to be picture perfect with their first showstopper – a spectacular 3D biscuit portrait challenge that requires precision baking and superb decorating skills. Three challenges, three chances to win star baker, three chances to avoid leaving the tent.

Paul and Prue want to see what the bakers – and their biscuits – are made of before deciding which unlucky baker will be the first sent home.

Great British Bake Off 2018 begins tonight at 8PM on Channel 4.

Meanwhile, The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice is returning with Jo Brand staying as host, airing on Thursday nights on Channel 4.
