8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown to return for new series with an all-female special

Comedy gameshow planning one-off episode to mark 100 years of votes for women

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown is set to air an all-female special to celebrate 100 years since women first won the right to vote in the UK.

Channel 4 bosses have commissioned a new 12-episode series of the popular comedy gameshow, according to Chortle.

One will mark the milestone anniversary, which occurred earlier this month, by featuring an exclusively female line-up of celebrities and comedians.

Ruth Phillips, managing director of production company Zeppotron, said: “It’s going to be a real privilege for us to make this one off all-women version of the show, to celebrate 100 years of female suffrage.

“Over the years 8 Out Of 10 Cats has had the opportunity to help launch and nurture the TV careers of a wealth of brilliant female comedy talent on Channel 4.

“It feels like a natural extension for us to now provide an all-female platform for many of the funniest stars of the comedy world.

“We like to think that if Emmeline Pankhurst were to have a favourite comedy panel show with cats in the title, it would probably be this one.”

The women taking part in the special will be revealed at a later date.

It is unclear whether presenter Jimmy Carr will be given the night off as part of the theme, but resident maths expert Rachel Riley and lexicographer Susie Dent are likely to appear.

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown was originally created for a one-off ‘Mash-up’ night on Channel 4 in 2012.

It was so popular with viewers that it became a show in its own right, and almost 100 episodes have now aired.

The broadcaster has yet to announce when the new series will begin.

Cats Does Countdown isn’t the only entertainment show that has marked the centenary of female suffrage.

Celebrity Big Brother’s recent ‘Year of the Woman’ series began with only female housemates, before men arrived four days in.
