Some Great British Bake Off fans have accused favourite contestant Manon of cheating in last night’s show.
It was the second episode of the Great British Bake Off 2018 this week, as the new bakers struggled with a heat wave.
The tent awaited the remaining bakers, as they took their place under the critical eye of judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig returning for presenting duties.
This week was Cake Week. It featured an ambitious chocolate collared showstopper which saw the contestants battled to keep their creations together.
Manon – who was named star baker last week – was one of those who struggled. She ended up leaving her cake wrapped in plastic until it was judged.
“Basically my chocolate didn’t set,” Manon explained as Paul peeled off the acetate.
Prue went on to praise the result: “This chocolate is beautiful tempered and absolutely shiny, that’s a very nice sponge”.
Paul added: “Very very nice cake. Very smart. It’s a shame you didn’t take the plastic off”.
On Twitter, some fans of the show accused Manon of ‘cheating’.
“Why is no one pointing it that Manon cheated by leaving her plastic collar on, therefore giving it extra time to set,” one wrote.
Another added: “Anyone else outraged at the cheek of Manon leaving the plastic on? I call cheat #GBBO”
A third posted online: “Oooh, bake off controversy! I love Manon to the moon and back, but would the other bakers’ cakes also have looked better if they’d left the plastic on past time? #GBBO #AWomanSconed”
And a fourth shared: “Think it’s massively unfair that Manon didn’t remove her plastic and allowed the extra time for her choc to set tbh #GBBO2018”
The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesday nights on Channel 4.
