Coronation Street’s younger stars ‘could face axe as new boss takes over’

Younger stars on the Coronation Street cast could be facing the axe after a new boss took over the show.

ITV yesterday announced a big shake up to Corrie and Emmerdale after current Corrie boss Kate Oates left the soap.

Current Emmerdale boss Iain MacLeod had been appointed as the new Producer of Coronation Street while Former ITV Drama Commissioner Jane Hudson has been appointed Emmerdale’s Executive Producer.

It’s been reported that Iain already has big plans for Corrie, focusing on storylines about the ‘older’ stars of the Street.

Younger cast are said to be worried about getting the axe once the new boss takes over.

“Kate was particularly popular with the younger stars,” a source told The Sun newspaper. “Her departure has left people worried the new producer will want to end the violent stuff and start again. And lots are worried about a cull.”

One insider told the tabloid: “There’s been a feeling that some of the younger cast members just sleep-walk through their lines and act on social media that they are huge stars. I think they might have a rude awakening in store.”

A spokesperson for ITV said for now it was all just “speculation”.

Prior to Iain taking his position at Emmerdale in 2015 he was Series Producer at Hollyoaks, a role he held since 2013. A former Coronation Street researcher and Story Editor from July 2009 until 2013, Iain left the programme in 2013 to join Hollyoaks and was promoted to Series Producer shortly afterwards.

Iain said: “Working on Emmerdale at a time when it’s enjoyed such success has been a total joy and I will miss the people and the place immensely – it’s a special show full of huge talent.

“Only Corrie could have tempted me away. It gave me my first job in TV as an assistant researcher many years ago and to be returning as producer is the fulfilment of a longstanding dream. It’ll be like a reunion with an old friend and I look forward to continuing the amazing work already being done by everyone connected with the show.”
