Will the Strictly Come Dancing ‘curse’ strike this year?

As Strictly Come Dancing gets underway, the question of the show’s ‘curse’ is up for debate again

Over the years, Strictly has been blamed for ruining relationships with its so-called curse.

But, according to Aston Merrygold at least, the curse won’t strike this year.

“All the girls are beautiful and so talented. It’s like Hollywood has been thrown onto the BBC,” he said this week. “I get the Strictly curse but I’m sure half the time it comes from a seed that gets planted somewhere from a fifth party and becomes embedded.

“Like someone reads a comment on Twitter and goes, ‘Oh, what I have done?’

“But not this year.”

The JLS singer told The Sun newspaper: “I think everyone is more than happy and concentrating on their dancing. I’m like, ‘Alright guys! No, I’m not! It’s all about the dance for me’.

“Janette is amazing and I went for dinner with her and Sarah the other day.”

Charlotte Hawkins recently dismissed Strictly Come Dancing’s so-called ‘curse’ as well.

The Good Morning Britain presenter says her nine-year marriage isn’t at risk from Strictly’s supposed ‘curse’ on relationships.

Charlotte told HELLO magazine: “One of the things I get asked about most is the ‘curse of Strictly’, but it’s not an issue as we’re very happily married.”

Her husband Mark echoed Charlotte’s comments and said of Charlotte and her pro partner Brendan Cole: “It’s really important they get on – there needs to be quite a bit of chemistry there for their dancing to be good.

“Brendan is a really nice bloke – I’m very happy with him as a choice.”

However, single soap actress Gemma Atkinson laughed off the ‘Strictly curse’, saying any relationship on the show would be a “blessing”.

The TV star told The Sun newspaper: “I’ve been single for ages so there wouldn’t be any curse for me. It would be a blessing.”

Strictly Come Dancing 2017 airs Saturday and Sunday nights on BBC One.
