X Factor fans LOVE Benji Matthews’ original song about EastEnders’ Mick and Linda

Benji Matthews took quite the risk on The X Factor 2017 last weekend.

Last Sunday was the second of three bootcamp special episodes, airing from 7:30PM on ITV Sunday evening.

Saturday night saw the bootcamp challenges begin with the Wall of Songs before the arena auditions kicked off.

We then saw the arena auditions continue as the remaining contestants sang one by one in a bid to make the six chair challenge.

They chose their own song to perform for not only the judges but – for the first time this series – a live audience.

One of the acts singing on Sunday was 17 year-old student Benji Matthews.

The teenager previously impressed the judges with a cover of Alicia Keys, but came to bootcamp with his own original song called Sweet.

“I’m really out of my comfort zone at bootcamp,” admitted Benji before performing. “I’m really anxious about today, I’m not used to performing in front of crowds like this.

“Especially doing my own song, but I feel like I’m in touch of the next round now. I want it.”

On stage and Benji said his original track was a love song – inspired by characters on EastEnders Mick and Linda.

The strange inspiration proved seemed to work and the song proved a hit with the judges and audience.

Benji got a yes from the judges, seeing him through to the six chair challenge.

However not everyone singing a self-penned song got through.

Also going out on stage with original material was Jordan Rabjohn, a 22 year-old phone shop sales assistant from Sheffield, singing ‘Souvenir’ and El’tee, a 20 year-old from Essex, performing Search and Seek.

But neither made it through.

The X Factor 2017 continues Saturday and Sunday nights on ITV.
