Channel 4 is said to be working on a revival of Shipwrecked for 2019.
The reality show, which first aired in 2000, sees a batch of castaways left on a deserted island.
It’ll seven years since the show was last on TV, having spent over a decade on and off air up until 2012.
“Lots of people have fond memories of watching Shipwrecked in their youth and dreaming about joining the fun in paradise,” a source said today.
They told The Sun newspaper: “Now Channel 4 have decided to give millennials the same experience, after Love Island proved sun-kissed hunks and beauties frolicking in a tropical setting can result in huge ratings.”
The source quipped that the series wouldn’t be survival based like Bear Grylls’ show The Island, saying “On Shipwrecked, the biggest hardship the castaways faced was getting tan lines.”
Shipwrecked originally started way back in 2000, with 16 contestants dumped on the Cook Islands in the pacific. Only seven remained 68 days later (don’t worry, the others had left, not died!) but unfortunately for them there was no prize. This format continued until the end of 2002 when it was eventually axed.
In 2006 however the show was brought back with a twist, now called ‘Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands’. The contestants were split into two teams on two different islands and each week new contestants would spend a few days with both teams, before deciding to join one island. Contestants were also allowed to nominate themselves to switch islands at the weekly beach meetings
The show was now completely different, with the team with the most members at the end of the 5 month stay winning a prize jackpot of £100,000 split between them. In the final series to air in 2009, there was another twist which saw just one member from the winning team take home all the money.
In 2011 there was yet another revival, this time dubbed Shipwrecked: The Island which aired between October and January 2012. It aired on E4 and saw the winner leave with £5,000.
