Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins 2021 line up
Ulrika Jonsson
Writer and TV presenter Ulrika says: “Obviously on a physical level, I never felt that I was going to be a prominent contender. I’m now 54, I was 53 when I did it, obviously. I wanted to know what I was made of. Psychologically, I’ve gone through all sorts of things, but what am I made of? What am I? What do I have the courage for? What don’t I have the courage for?
“I wanted to face some really ugly, scary, horrible, nasty fears. Just to shake things up a little bit, because also, at my age, I’m never going to be given this opportunity again. So, it’s not going to happen again and the older I get, it definitely is not going to happen. So it felt like very much the wrong thing to do, but the right thing to do.”
Saira Khan
TV personality Saira says: “I signed up to this show because I was one of those audience members that watches from the comfort of our sofas and goes, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe they couldn’t do that!’, and then my kids will go, ‘Well, why don’t you try and have a go mummy? Do you think you can do it?’
“And I thought, ‘Yeah, if it comes along, I’ll do it.’ And guess what? It came along. I think I was at the point in my life where I just thought, ‘You know what? I love a challenge. I come from a challenge reality background, I know this is totally different, but I’m always up for proving myself. This is the perfect fit. I think I’m fit enough. I think I’m brave enough. Go on, girl, put your money where your mouth is and give it a go.'”
Ore Oduba
TV presenter Ore says of signing up: “It was so whimsical. I didn’t think that they would select me but I just thought ‘I’ve got no job. I need the income’. And genuinely, even getting beasted by some ex-Special Forces sounds more interesting than what I was doing.”
Kerry Katona
TV personality Kerry says: “I thought I’ve really gone through so much in my life, it was almost like if I got through that I’d really prove to myself I’ve turned my life around. That’s what was in my head, that’s why I wanted to do it. I wanted to prove to everybody else, the public, the press, that I’ve turned my life around.”
Vicky Pattison
Reality TV star Vicky says: “I’m a fan of the show, I love SAS. I always watch it every year, the civilian and the celebs, and I always think, ‘Oh my God, everyone is so incredible, so brave.’ I love to push myself, I love to get myself out of my comfort zone.
“I sat at home and like everybody else I was dying for a challenge, to get out there. So I think it was a number of reasons why I did it. Just wanting to do something new, wanting to challenge myself, being a big fan of the show. It felt like the right time to do it. So I took the leap and went for it.”
Jake Quickenden
Singer and TV personality Jake says: “Out of all the reality shows that I’ve done, and there have been a few, SAS is one that I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve always been competitive. I’ve always loved my sport. I’ve always loved challenging myself, and what better way to get challenged by Ant Middleton screaming in your face when you’re laid in a pond? You know what I mean?”
Alexandra Burke
Singer and West End star Alexandra says of taking part: “It was probably the best decision I’ve ever made in my whole entire life, because I wanted to do something for me. Everything I do is always been based on either doing it for my family or doing it for someone else, my fans or whoever.
“This was the first time where I feel really selfish even just saying it and it doesn’t sound like me, it’s not me to say that I would just do things for myself, but this is the first time where I said, ‘I’m going to do this for me. Not for anyone else, it’s to make myself proud to see how far I could push myself’. And it’s honestly the best decision I ever made.”
James Cracknell
Olympic Gold medallist James says of signing up: “I guess it’s the closest thing I’m going to get to seeing if I could do SAS selection without actually doing it. Going into it, I thought there would be some things I’ll be able to do, and some things I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to do. It’s interesting to test yourself.”
Kieron Dyer
Former Premiership Footballer Kieron says: “I can remember watching the second season with Tony Bellew and I was just dramatically hooked, I was saying, ‘I could do this’ and my Mrs and kids were going, ‘No chance, you can’t deal with the cold. You can’t deal with this. You can’t deal with that.’
“And I was like, ‘I know I could do this!’ I texted my friend who used to be my agent, he’s like a best friend now and just said, ‘Get me on the SAS show next season!'”
Aled Davies
Paralympic Athlete Aled says: “It was pretty brutal, but, to be honest, it was an opportunity of a lifetime. I grew up with a lot of my friends joining the army at the age of 15, 16, and so on, and that’s what I wanted to do as well. I had a specific interest in the army.
“Then, unfortunately, with my disability, that option isn’t available to me in the role I would have wanted. So when this opportunity came, I was like, ‘Yes, I get to actually do something I was never allowed to do.’ I was never allowed the opportunity to do it, so of course I was going to take it with both hands. What I didn’t realise is how hard it was going to be.”
Wes Nelson
Love Island star and musician Wes says: “To me, signing up for this show, I’m one of those people that wants to challenge myself in any way possible, and definitely challenge myself to the maximum. What course challenges you more than this?
“I don’t think there’s anything really in the world that you could ever get an opportunity to do something like this again. So, for me, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to prove myself as more than just someone in the public eye or a singer or a TV star. So it’s just for me to prove myself, really.”
Shanaze Reade
BMX and track world champion Shanaze says: “As soon as I saw the show was on the TV years ago, I was like, ‘That’s a bit of me!’ It’s obviously mentally challenging, physically, and emotionally.
“I was like, ‘If I ever got the opportunity, I’d grab it with both hands because I want to be tested away from sport and arena, to step out of my comfort zone.’ It was just the perfect show to do.”
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins airs on Channel 4 from Sunday, 29 August at 9PM.
