RuPaul’s Drag Race is coming to the UK in 2019, it’s been confirmed.
A British version of the hit US TV series has been in the works for what feels like forever.
Discussions about bringing the hit drag talent contest to the UK began as many as five years ago, with telly host Jonathan Ross backing the project.
Interest was renewed after Michelle Visage, a judge on the US show, took part in Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother in 2015 – but last year, she said TV chiefs see the show as too “niche” to bring across the pond.
Now BBC Three have announced that a first ever British series will finally air next year.
“Start your engines, @RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is coming soon to BBC Three,” the BBC announced.
Creator Rupaul Charles said: “I am beyond excited to celebrate the massive charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent of the Queen’s queens. And before anyone asks, yes, we would be thrilled to have Meghan Markle join us, as we are already preparing a ‘Royal-Mother-To-Be’ runway challenge.”
Michelle Visage took to Twitter to add that she would “of course” be a part of the show, announcing: “Yup. FINALLY. It’s HAPPENING!”.
“guys. yes. of COURSE i am a judge…..i am THE judge!!” she added.
Sources say that the show will generally “follow the exact same format” as the American series but will add “British twists and some famous guests.”
An insider told The Sun newspaper: “It will be filmed in London and casting directors will be searching for the best drag artists Britain has to offer – there’ll be a huge budget for costumes and production and bosses are hoping that a star is born. It’s really exciting for everyone involved and is expected to draw a lot of new fans to the franchise.
“RuPaul has a cult following so it’s massive news.”
