Love Island 2018 complaints dismissed by Ofcom

TV Watchdog Ofcom has dismissed complaints surrounding Love Island 2018.

It was Jack and Dani who won love Island 2018 last Monday night with over 80% of the vote.

Rivals Laura & Paul were runners up, Josh & Kaz finished in third and Wes & Megan ended the series in 4th place.

Throughout the series the show faced a number of controversies.

They included complaints concerning rows and break ups between the contestants, including claims of ‘bullying’ and even ’emotional abuse’.

But Ofcom said: “We carefully assessed complaints about contestants’ behaviour in certain episodes of Love Island.

“However, we believe most viewers would have expected emotionally-charged, confrontational scenes in this programme, where the format is well established.”

People also complained about the infamous Love Island lie detector but Ofcom said it was an “established feature of the programme, and would have been in line with viewers’ expectations”.

Further objections concerned the supposed ‘editing out’ of Samira Mighty.

But Ofcom said that “the extent to which contestants are given airtime” was “ultimately an editorial matter” for ITV.

Similarly, the watchdog said it was “the programme makers’ decision whether or not clips should be shown to the contestants” in response to the decision not to air Georgia & Frankie’s kiss to the Islanders.

A spokesperson for Love Island previously revealed that alongside Samira, scenes involving Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham, Sam Bird and Georgia Steel and Charlie Brake and Ellie Brown were also cut.

They explained: “We don’t necessarily show every moment in the hideaway owing to the constraints of it only being a one hour show.”

In all, Love Island 2018 received 4,193 complaints, the most ever in its four series to date. Last year’s saw just 135 complaints.

This year even the final results caused objections, with some people unhappy that Laura & Paul finished in second place (not that it means much) because they weren’t in an official couple.

Love Island will return for a new series next summer on ITV2.
