Poldark season 5 will air in 2019 – but will it be the last?

Poldark’s fifth and potentially final series will air in 2019, the BBC has confirmed.

The show returned earlier this year in June for its fourth series and the Beeb has commissioned a fifth run in 2019.

Sources at the channel have said that season five will be the last, but Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield says there is a “sure” to be a sixth series

Speaking on Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday, she said: “We still have five books to do. The BBC wants to do the final five books, the cast want to do it and I want to do it.

“So I’m sure, yes, there will be a sixth series – but it won’t be for some time”

As yet the BBC hasn’t made official its intentions for the show beyond the end of season 5 next year.

However Poldark himself Aidan Turner has hinted the BBC One series will end next year.

Aidan – who plays the title character – has suggested 2019 will see the last episodes.

“It’s been big for us all and it’ll always be a special thing but things naturally do come to an end and I think we’ve done really well with Winston’s books and I hope he’d be really proud,” he said. “But it’s nice when things naturally come to an end, you don’t want things to go on really long.

“I think next year might be the last one, certainly for a while.”

He added: “We may come back, who knows. There’s a huge gap in the books, about 15 years.

“I wouldn’t age up, I’d come back in 10 years. I’d revisit it the right way, I’m not putting grey in my hair or anything like that.”
