Mastermind 2023 start date confirmed for new series with Clive Myrie

The BBC has confirmed the start date for the brand new 2023 series of Mastermind.

The returning series will be the latest with new host Clive Myrie, who took over from John Humphrys in 2021.

Clive is a BBC news journalist and a regular presenter of the BBC News at Six and Ten since 2010, as well as the BBC News Channel.

He will take charge of the iconic quiz competition once more when it begins on BBC Two and iPlayer on Monday, 28 August at 7:30PM for its new series.

In the first episode, the specialist subjects are The Poirot Novels of Agatha Christie, The Calvin and Hobbes Cartoons, Drake and Red Clydeside.

The 30-part series will run weekly throughout 2023 and into 2024.

Clive Myrie said: “As a kid growing up watching Mastermind, I could never have imagined hosting this most iconic of quiz shows, in its 50th anniversary year.

“Its enduring appeal is down to its simplicity; a test of knowledge against the clock. Riveting and entertaining, it is still Britain’s toughest quiz. Happy Birthday Mastermind.”

The specialist subjects are as eclectic as ever, ranging from Professor Stephen Hawking, Toy Dog Breeds and Guest Stars in the Sitcom Friends, to the Spanish Artist Francisco de Goya, Shakespeare’s Comedies and The Great Fire of London.

Mastermind first aired on BBC One between 1972 and 1997 hosted by Magnus Magnusson. It then became a radio show on Radio 4 with Peter Snow.

Clive Anderson hosted a TV revival on the Discovery Channel in 2002 before it returned to the BBC on BBC Two with Humphrys.

For now, Mastermind continues with its Celebrity series on Saturday nights on BBC One. You can watch episodes online and catch up via the BBC iPlayer here.
