Jeremy Kyle “utterly devastated” as show is cancelled after death of guest

Jeremy Kyle has issued a statement following the axing of his TV show.

The day time programme was taken off the air at the start of this week.

In a statement released at the the time ITV said they had suspended The Jeremy Kyle Show until further notice after the death of a guest shortly after filming.

Steven Dymond took part in the show earlier this month (May) but was found dead days later.

ITV confirmed yesterday that it had dropped the show for good and it would not be returning to screens.

In a statement released today, Jeremy Kyle said: “Myself and the production team I have worked with for the last 14 years are all utterly devastated by the recent events.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with Steve’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

ITV’s chief executive, Carolyn McCall announced yesterday the channel’s decision to permanently axe the show.

“Given the gravity of recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show,” she said. “The Jeremy Kyle Show has had a loyal audience and has been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but now is the right time for the show to end.

“Everyone at ITV’s thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond.”

ITV added: “The previously announced review of the episode of the show is under way and will continue.

“ITV will continue to work with Jeremy Kyle on other projects.”

The Jeremy Kyle Show first aired in 2005 on ITV and has since broadcast more than 3,000 episodes.

In the wake of the incident, the UK government has launched an inquiry into the duty of care provided by reality TV shows.

It follows the deaths of two former Love Island contestants who are both understood to have taken their own lives.
