John Barrowman had to conquer his fear of heights straight away on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2018 in a scary challenge – 100 METRES above ground.
The new series kicked off with John, James McVey, Rita Simons and Sair Khan getting to know each other on a glamorous boat in Australia’s Gold Coast.
It wasn’t long before hosts Dec Donnelly and Holly Willoughby arrived, heralding the start of the jungle experience.
From the outset, this year’s campmates were split in to two teams – with John and Sair founding the Red team, while James and Rita led the Yellow team.
The journey to camp involved various challenges, and winners of the first two would be able to pick which celebs joined their team.
Rita formed a strategy, telling James: “We need to pick a smart one, a strong one and a brave one.”
Meanwhile, Sair vowed: “We’re gonna start on a high, we’re going to win.”
A helicopter ride later, the foursome arrived at Queensland beauty spot Tanninaba Falls for their first challenge, named The Edge.
Two towers were suspended from the edge of a cliff, a whopping 100 metres above the jungle floor. The teams played separately, with one member on either tower.
Each pair had to climb the towers and collect ten numbered flags in order – but a teammate couldn’t proceed to their next flag until their partner had retrieved the previous one.
Pointing out exactly what the celebs were facing, Dec announced: “This is the highest challenge we’ve ever had on I’m A Celebrity.”
First up were the Yellows, and James was just as bothered by his harness as he was by the height.
“Oooh, its tight in the groin area,” he laughed.
Eventually, Rita grabbed their final flag, muttering: “This is so scary.”
“It’s hard isn’t it? At least you don’t have testicles,” joked James.
The Reds then stepped up to the platform, and John chose that moment to confess his fear of heights to Sair.
“I’m s***ing myself a little bit, but don’t tell anybody,” he admitted.
However, the Arrow star managed to power through and complete the task.
Back on the ground, Dec and Holly revealed the results, with the Yellows beating the Reds by 49 seconds.
Therefore, James and Rita won the power to choose two new teammates from a choice of four famous faces.
They welcomed Anne Hegerty and Fleur East in to the Yellow team, leaving Harry Redknapp and Nick Knowles to join the Reds.
“We didn’t know what was coming up,” explained Rita. “So we reckoned someone physically fit and strong in case it was a physical challenge and someone with brains.”
“So I’m unfit and brainless,” quipped Nick.
I’m A Celebrity airs nightly at 9.00pm on ITV, with Extra Camp immediately afterwards on ITV2.
