Gemma Collins blasts lack of diversity on “mind-numbingly boring” Love Island

Reality TV icon isn't a fan of ITV2 show - but is backing Amy Hart for success

Gemma Collins has hit out at Love Island, calling the ITV2 dating contest “a little bit mind-numbingly boring”.

As a reality TV superstar, there aren’t many shows that Gemma hasn’t given her seal of approval.

The Only Way Is Essex star has appeared on I’m A Celebrity, Celebs Go Dating and Celebrity Masterchef – not to mention her iconic stint on Dancing On Ice this year.

However, it seems she draws the line at the genre’s newest craze.

Speaking on today’s edition of Good Morning Britain, The GC revealed she isn’t a fan of Love Island.

She did defend the islanders after Piers Morgan branded them “brain-dead zombies”, saying: “They’re young people, they’ve seen an opportunity.”

But she continued: “We’re a little bit older and wiser. It is a little bit mind-numbingly boring to watch.

“It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure for people, they’ve had their long day, they come in, they put it on. I do think it is for the youngsters.”

Gemma backed persistent calls from some observers for Love Island to feature a more diverse range of contestants.

“There’s so many people out there saying, can we have older people on there, a bit more diversity, and I do think it needs it,” she agreed.

“A lot of people are saying to me, ‘it’s making me feel insecure about my body’. But you know, we were all 21 once, people have got to take it with a pinch of salt.”

Despite her distaste for the show, Gemma is backing one of this year’s islanders for success.

Amy Hart has been mimicking her Celebrity Big Brother memay moments, including the famous line: “I’m claustrophobic Darren!”

Unsurprisingly, the TV diva now reckons Amy will be “one to watch” in the future.

“The one to be the winner out of there is the gorgeous girl with the fabulous impression of me,” she predicted.

“What I love about her, she’s got great personality. I’d be signing her the minute she came out the house.

“She’s not gonna go back to a normal job. I do think we’ll be able to use her in TV, 100%.”

While Gemma may not be an avid viewer, Love Island is more popular than ever with the general public.

The latest series is on course to be the highest-rating yet, pulling in up to 6million viewers.

Love Island 2019 airs daily at 9.00pm on ITV2, with the latest recoupling due to take place tonight.
