Why Stephen Mulhern didn’t replace Ant on I’m A Celebrity

Stephen Mulhern has revealed just why he didn’t host I’m A Celebrity last year.

The Britain’s Got More Talent presenter was widely tipped to join Dec after Ant stepped down from the latest series in Australia.

However it was This Morning’s Holly Willoughby who eventually teamed up with Dec in Oz.

Now Stephen has revealed why he didn’t get the job, saying it was all down to gender.

“You couldn’t have gone with another guy. It had to be a female host. It was the best possible choice,” Stephen said.

He told The Sun newspaper: “Holly was perfect. Holly and Dec worked a treat.”

It was previously confirmed that Ant would return alongside Dec for the next series of I’m A Celebrity in the autumn.

Meanwhile, with Saturday Night Takeaway not airing this year, Stephen is set for his own primetime TV series.

In For A Penny will launch this weekend – April 13, 7:30PM – on ITV before Britain’s Got Talent.

It’ll see Stephen challenge members of the British public to turn their pennies into pounds.

He’ll travel the length and breadth of the UK inviting the unsuspecting British public to take part in a host of hilarious and often silly games to win a cash prize.

He’ll pop up anywhere, from petrol stations to shopping centres, surprising people and randomly selecting whoever he can find to take part in games such as Pump It Up, Mum’s The Word and the popular In For A Penny, from Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

Stephen said: “I have absolutely loved filming this show. I don’t think I have ever laughed so much filming a series and it was all down to the Great British public, they are the real stars.

“I’ve been privileged to meet some of the most amazing people up and down the country and now the viewers will get to see just how funny and entertaining they are.”
