The Masked Singer UK 2022 spoilers
Chandelier – Heather Small
At the end of the first episode, Chandelier was revealed as iconic singer Heather Small.
“I’d seen Gabrielle and Joss Stone saying how much fun it was and in these most challenging of times a little bit of fun is good for everyone,” Heather said of taking part. “The challenge was to disguise my voice so the panel couldn’t get to guess who I was.
“I wanted it to be a real surprise and I think I achieved that. I live with my son and mother and they had no clue. I managed to keep it a secret.”
Snow Leopard – Gloria Hunniford
At the end of the second episode, Snow Leopard was unmasked as TV and radio presenter Gloria Hunniford OBE.
“I genuinely love this programme I couldn’t believe when I was asked to take part,” Gloria said after leaving the competition.
On signing up for the show, Gloria said: “I’m of a certain age and it was a challenge. It sounded like a lot of fun and I thought I’d like to try it.”
Lionfish – Will Young
At the end of the third episode, Lionfish was unmasked as singer Will Young.
On signing up for the show, Will said: “I thought the challenge of disguising my voice would be fantastic and also I loved the idea of playing a character!”
He added of his Lionfish costume: “I thought the costume was so beautiful and I really enjoyed occupying this strange character and looking like I was under water a lot of the time ”
Bagpipes – Pat Cash
At the end of the fourth episode, Bagpipes was unmasked as Grand Slam tennis champ Pat Cash.
He said: “I’ve always been a frustrated rock star and fancied doing the Masked Singer from the first day I saw it. I just thought it would be so much fun to rock out, although I prefer to hide behind a guitar instead of a sweaty mask.
“It was a great experience overall. As luck would have it, my schedule cleared. I’m a big believer in letting your higher power take over and I suppose it meant I was able to take part in the show.”
Poodle – Tom Chaplin
At the end of the fifth episode, Poodle was unmasked as Keane lead singer Tom Chaplin.
Speaking after his exit, Tom said: “I’ve got to a point in my life where I don’t take myself too seriously anymore. I think that’s pretty important if you’re going to dress up as a seven foot multicoloured poodle.
“I’ve also become much more interested in embracing different challenges – being in a band is like living on a little island, so it’s good to try things that are out of your comfort zone!”
Firework – Jaime Winstone
At the end of the sixth episode, Firework was unmasked as actress Jaime Winstone.
Jamie revealed after her exit: “I had seen a few episodes and thought it was wild. I loved the idea of it and how much joy my son Raymond and godson Bear enjoy it.
“The last two years have been very doom and gloom for our industry and ultimately, I love to perform. I usually take on roles that are very gritty and serious, so for me this was a great way to show people what I can do, what I love doing and to make my son very happy. He’s going to think his mummy is a firework. This was my main reason.”
Doughnuts – Michael Owen
At the end of the sixth episode, Doughnuts was unmasked as footballer Michael Owen.
Speaking after his exit, Michael revealed: “I’d never watched it before but had heard of the show. I’m not normally free on Saturday nights during the football season as I’m often travelling back from games. I have been approached to do other TV shows but I usually have a busy TV schedule and that has always meant I haven’t been able to or I hadn’t felt like the shows were a good fit.
“I have four children and they have been badgering me to do one and then this opportunity came up. When this opportunity came up I decided to say yes – but I still had to overcome a hurdle as there was the small matter of the Manchester Derby potentially being moved which would clash with one of the filming dates but thankfully everything fell into place.”
Traffic Cone – Aled Jones
At the end of the seventh episode, Traffic Cone was unmasked as classical singer and presenter Aled Jones.
On signing up for the show, Aled said: “It looked like fun and a chance to challenge myself with songs I’d never normally sing!”
He added: “I love Traffic Cone! The best costume and character. He became real! He was a fun loving character with massive feet! It was very sweaty inside that costume though and hard to dance ‘cos I couldn’t see my feet!”
Rockhopper – Michelle Williams
At the end of the seventh episode, Rockhopper was unmasked as Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams.
After being unmasked, Michelle said of the show: “I love music and to be able to cover some of my favorite songs without judgment was awesome. I wanted to challenge myself and also how much FUN I knew it would be.
“I was getting so much love from the panel and audience and it made me so anxious to reveal who I am. I was enjoying them throwing out all of these other amazing names as well.”
Robobunny – Mark Feehily
In the final, Robobunny finished in third place and was unmasked as Westlife star Mark Feehily.
Mark said: “I was craving to do something different, outside of my comfort zone vocally, I really wanted to add comedy to my character so when it was agreed I would be allowed to do the two-voice thing I signed up.”
Speaking about his outfit, he shared: “I had a very difficult costume. It literally had to be operated with me having to move the rabbit’s mouth using a mechanism in my right hand as I sang and did the voice changing all whilst singing songs I had never sung before and bolted into an extremely heavy wooden robot suit…It was definitely the most difficult and multi-faceted of performances I’ve ever done.
“I wanted to set myself a huge challenge and by the end of it I did think, “What the hell have I let myself in for here?!” But in the end the pay off is when you sit back and watch it all playing out on TV and the fun and entertainment it brings. I was very proud watching it back and my daughter was freaking out because she recognised my voice and was looking at the Robobunny and was just confused!”
Mushroom – Charlotte Church
At the end of the final, Mushroom finished as runner up and was unmasked as singer Charlotte Church.
After being unmasked, Charlotte said: “I took on the challenge because I liked the idea of the show being entirely centered around the voice, and I haven’t sung in the public eye for quite some time now so it felt like the perfect opportunity. Also, I really wanted to design my own costume as I thought this would be very exciting to do, and it really was.”
Speaking about her costume, Charlotte added: “I absolutely ADORED it. I love Mushroom to the core of my soul and I really love the role that Fungi plays on Earth. I think that it’s going to be so important in how we fix a lot of the ecological problems that we’re currently facing, including things such as soil degradation. So, to be the representative for the mushroom community felt absolutely brilliant, my heart was fit to burst!”
Panda – Natalie Imbruglia
At the end of the final, Panda was crowned the winner and unmasked as singer Natalie Imbruglia.
After being unmasked, Natalie said: “I did it for my son. He loves the character I chose. I also thought it would be fun to sing with a mask on, no need to spend hours in hair and make-up. I liked the idea of hiding my identity and putting on an accent to throw people off the scent. I guess it’s also an acting gig. ”
Discussing her Panda outfit, Natalie added: “I loved my mask, such a friendly face. I miss it. I wish we got to take them home. I’d wear it round the house for a laugh. I chose a character I could humanise and that I could dance in.”
