Tom Allen will host a brand new BBC One special to mark the 10th anniversary of same sex marriage.
2024 marks a decade since the first gay wedding took place.
In a new one-off show, Big Gay Wedding, comedian, presenter and writer, Tom Allen is pulling out all the stops to arrange the wedding of their dreams for one gay couple, Adam and Dan.
Tom recruits a group of famous friends to assist with organising an unforgettable wedding. His team includes the talented dancer Oti Mabuse, renowned stylist Nick Hems, celebrated baker John Whaite, and the unforgettable Sophie Ellis-Bextor, known for her hit Murder on the Dancefloor, who all contribute to various aspects of the celebration, from entertainment to attire.
As Tom aids the fortunate pair in planning the event of the year, he uncovers the remarkable narrative behind the struggle for equal marriage rights. He engages with LGBTQ+ pioneers such as Sandi Toksvig, Peter Tatchell, Lynn Sutcliffe, and Sarah Hews, who played pivotal roles in reaching this milestone.
Additionally, he interacts with key political figures like Dame Angela Eagle, Lynne Featherstone, and David Cameron, who significantly contributed to the legalisation of the movement.
This special documentary sees Tom reflecting on his personal journey of coming out and the progress of LGBTQ+ rights. It culminates in the joyous union of the couple, celebrating love, community, and the achievements of equality.
Tom Allen said: “The fact that same sex couples couldn’t get married here just ten years ago means we should never be complacent about the progress we’ve made and so it’s only right to celebrate it thoroughly. I’m looking forward to making this joyous celebration of love & gay marriage, or garriage as I like to call it.”
Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen airs Wednesday, 27 March at 9PM on BBC One.
