Love Island star Kady McDermott has been ditched from her local town’s Christmas light switch on.
And she’s hit back after a petition set up by residents left her feeling ‘bullied and trolled’.
Residents in Welwyn Garden City demanded Kady’s appearance be cancelled. They said: “This is a family event and it would be much better to have a local hero instead. Set a better example to our kids. If you don’t, we won’t show up to the event.”
Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District later announced the they were cancelling Kady’s appearance.
“We had good intentions to create an inclusive event for all ages of the WGC community,” they said in a statement (via WHtimes.co.uk. “We came across Kady through the Brain Tumour Research charity which Kady supports and has raised a significant amount of money for.
“Kady has almost 1 million followers on social media, including many reputable brands and charities but generally appeals to the teenage population.
“We did not foresee such a strong reaction from the community and will be cancelling Kady’s appearance at the Christmas Light Switch-on.”
Hitting back, Kady took to her 1 million followers on social media to insist she was not upset about the petition itself but “the comments that come with it are absolutely disgusting.”
“Honestly, the comments I read from people where I grew up – they don’t know me on a personal level,” she said (via thecomet.net. “It’s absolutely disgusting.
“If you don’t want me to turn on the lights, absolutely fine, but I have been bullied and trolled.
“I think people forget that Love Island doesn’t define me.
“I’m a human. I’m someone’s daughter, granddaughter and sister.”
Kady, who appeared on theITV2 show in 2016, said: “I get it, not everyone likes Love Island but I have been treated like I’m from Crimewatch…
“You would think Hitler was turning on the lights.”
