X Factor's Dalton Andre Harris opens up about growing up in poverty

The X Factor contestant Dalton Andre Harris has spoken about growing up in poverty as a child.

Dalton is one of three acts left in The X Factor 2018 and going into the final after the weekend's semi-final result.

And ahead of the weekend's live shows, Dalton has discussed his childhood in Jamaica.

One of seven siblings, Dalton said: "It wasn't the best. It was poverty."

He told The Sun newspaper: "Growing up, I was born on the 29th December and Christmas is on the 25th, so you get your toy, one time a year. My mum's like 'You either chose. Your birthday or your Christmas. Which one you want?' I was like 'both.' So she didn't give me nothing."

Dalton confessed to stealing books and crayons from school to entertain himself.

"We'd steal books from school, the ones that weren't coloured, and we'd steal crayons to paint them because we couldn't afford the crayons," the singer explained. "That to us was more fun than going to a boring store to buy boring books. I was like 'wait till the teacher gets out of the class, then get through the window and go out.' It was fun for us back then. "

He added: "We couldn't afford physical things but we were happy."

After a tough upbringing, it appears that Dalton's fate is set to change.

Bookies have made him the firm favourite to win The X Factor in this weekend's live final.

Aoife Heffron, Spokesperson for bookmakers BoyleSports commented: “Dalton looks to have the X Factor title in the bag as he once again shortens and is now red hot at 2/9 to win."

Dalton's fellow Boys category singer mentored by Louis Tomlinson Anthony Russell is second in line while Simon Cowell's Girls category singer Scarlett Lee finds herself chalked up as the outsider to take the title.

The X Factor 2018 final begins on Saturday, December 1 at 7:30PM on ITV and continues with the final results show on Sunday at 7:30PM where the winner is crowned.

Performers over the weekend will include James Arthur, Anne Marie, Take That, Ellie Goulding and George Ezra.
