X Factor 2018: Maria Laroco stuns judges with Purple Rain cover

Maria Laroco stormed The X Factor UK stage this weekend with a cover of a Prince classic.

The new series of The X Factor was back tonight with the arena auditions at The SSE Arena, Wembley, in front of the judges and a 4,000 strong audience.

Once again, those auditioning faced the brand new panel made up of Simon Cowell, Robbie Williams, Ayda Williams and Louis Tomlinson.

One of the acts appearing this weekend was 17-year-old Maria Laroco from the Philippines

"Since I was a little girl I wanted to be an international superstar, I want to be big" she said.

"I love to do it, this is my dream," added Maria.

Maria then burst into a powerful performance of Purple Rain which got the audience up on their feet, while the judges looked on shocked.

After her performance, the panel joined the audience on their feet.

"That was absolutely incredible," reacted Louis Tomlinson, "You absolutely blew me away."

Simon concluded: "You are 17 years old, you've flown all the way, taken on one of the biggest songs in the world... I'm going to give you infinity yeses."

With four yeses, Maria sailed through to the next round.

Joining Maria at this week's auditions were 17-year-old Owen Mathews and is 26-year-old Flower Stall owner Natasha Boon from Camden Town in North London, who sings Impossible in her bid to make it through.

This year, acts need to get more than three ‘yeses’ to get through to the judge’s deliberation round, where the judges will decide who gets to fight for a seat in the Six Chair Challenge.

Those who make it into the next round will join the successful contestants from last weekend's opening show including Danny Tetley who belted out Jennifer Hudson's And I’m Telling You for Simon 17 years after first singing for him on Pop Idol.

Other acts who got through were teenager Molly Scott from County Durham, Dreamer hitmaker Janice Robinson and returning hopeful from last year, Anthony Russell.

The X Factor 2018 auditions continue, Saturday 8 September at 8:30PM and Sunday, 9 September at 8PM.
