Saturday night saw the very first stage of the live shows of The X Factor 2017 with a brand new format.

The contestants this year are performing in separate nights in their categories and on Saturday evening the Boys and Girls were first up.

And it was Spencer Sutherland who was first to be voted off the show after the debut live performances.

This year there is no sing off and the results are on the same night, decided by the viewer poll alone.

Once the vote had closed, Dermot O’Leary welcomed back the contestants before revealing that Spencer had received the fewest votes and was going home.

The American musician said on the show: “I just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone so much, and the UK for welcoming me with open arms.”

Chatting today (Monday) on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Spencer revealed mentor Louis Walsh had told him after the show: “You just don’t have a base here.

“You don’t have a huge area of people voting for you here.”

Explaining his decision to fly to the UK to apply, Spencer from Ohio said: “We have shows in America but none of them have the star power as The X Factor does. This is where it happens.”

“In America it is so hard to stand out, and there’s so many pop acts,” he added. “I needed the next big break.”

Spencer was one of two acts to leave this weekend, with Overs’ Talia Dean the second to be eliminated in Sunday’s show.

The X Factor 2017 continues next Saturday at 8:20PM and Sunday night at 7:05PM on ITV
