Former X Factor judge Dannii Mingoue could be set to return to the panel next year.
The ITV series easily had its highest ratings when the trio were on the show alongside Louis Walsh, with peak audiences of close to 20 million viewers for both of 2009 and 2010’s finals.
That compares to just 9 million viewers who watched Sam Bailey win the latest series in this month’s final.
It’s therefore no surprise to hear that bosses are keen to reunite the former judges, with a source saying today: “Dannii is still very popular in the UK and many people at ITV feel the return of Sharon Osbourne this year was positive and would like to do the same with Dannii.
“The show was most successful a number of years ago so they need some of that success and spark, perhaps mixed with one or two new faces from the music industry today.”
They added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Dannii and Simon together could be very intriguing and exciting on screen, there is a lot of history there.”
Dannii previously said she wouldn’t completely rule out a return to the show in the future.
Speaking in 2012 about the possibility of her ever working with Simon again, Dannii said: “Never say never. I wouldn’t rule it out.
“He is amazing and I learnt so much from him on that show. It put me in a really good place for working on Australia’s Got Talent, working on this show, and it changed my whole career around.
“I had never thought I want to be a judge, it isn’t something you can plan to do it.”
Other names linked to the new series next summer are said to include Robbie Williams, former X Factor finalist Olly Murs and past X Factor guest judge Rita Ora.
Auditions for The X Factor 2014 will start in the new year.
