'Magnificent' Liverpudlian girl group Estrella impress new X Factor judges

X Factor Estrella

New X Factor judges Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa Contostavlos were wowed by Liverpudlian girl group Estrella at the final auditions by the Mersey last week. The four-piece, made up of Gemma Davies, Jemma Moon, Kelly Flanagan and Ruth Pike previously made it to bootcamp last year.

Older than most X Factor girl groups with an average age of 25, the group told the panel they wanted to become as big as Destiny's Child. "Spent every night going over and over the audition, the outfits, what to say, what not to say," they said last Thursday.

But Louis Walsh seemed to be more concerned about their personal lives. "Do you have any pets?" he asked - to groans from Tulisa and Kelly.

After a less than invigorating story about a pet Chihuahua, the girls finally got the chance to perform, singing 'American Boy' by Estelle a capella.

Former Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland raved: "I have been waiting for you girls for so long. Why didn't ya'll come sooner? Oh my gosh!"

Gary Barlow meanwhile gushed: "It was absolutely magnificent! At last, four people who can sing together! We've seen so many groups so far but the one thing they all forget is that they have to sing together, like glue."

The four girls have been trying to make it big time for some years, with band member Gemma appearing in The X Factor in 2005, 2006 and 2010. The Liverpudlian singer first tried out as part of three piece Eskimo Blonde, who made it all the way to Simon Cowell's judges' houses in LA before getting turned away.

After being knocked back again 2006, Gemma created new group Estrella who auditioned on last year's show after just a month of being together. Despite making it to bootcamp, it was another no from the judges.

With a new panel this year however will it be fourth time lucky for Gemma? She says: "I decided to go back with a new four-piece, I knew a lot about the show already – the good and the bad.

“After just a couple of days we knew we had something special.

“We got some amazing comments from the judges. Louis [Walsh] said we were one of the best girl groups he’d ever seen.”

The singing contest returns next month on ITV1.
