Crystal Maze is to return for a brand new series to Channel 4.
But Stephen Merchant, who went down a hit as host of a one-off special earlier this, won't be hosting.
Originally fronted by Richard O'Brien, the Crystal Maze returned to TV for the first time since the 90s last month with a celebrity special for Stand Up To Cancer.
The show proved a ratings hit and now talks are underway for a full series revival, although Stephen Merchant won't be a part of it.
According to The Sun newspaper, the comic is instead looking to pursue his acting career in the States.
A source told the tabloid this week: “Stephen has made Channel 4’s job a lot harder by refusing to return for a full series. He was never too keen but the hope was he’d be swayed by the ratings."
The insider added: “Channel 4 is desperate to get the show back on air as soon as it can and is looking for it to be a significant part of its 2017 schedule but the fact it has no host is obviously a major obstacle."
A spokesperson for Channel 4 confirmed the story in a statement: “Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Stand Up To Cancer special early conversations are being had about The Crystal Maze.
“And whilst Stephen was an electrifying host he was always very clear that work commitments meant he would only be able to do the celebrity special.”
