Scarborough won’t be returning for a second series, the BBC has confirmed.

The comedy – which premiered on Friday nights earlier this year – is written and directed by Derren Litten, award-winning creator of ITV comedy Benidorm.

Set in the iconic North Yorkshire seaside town, it follows the lives of a motley band of Scarborough residents who are bonded by family, friendship and their love of karaoke.

Leading the cast were comedian and actor Jason Manford and former Corrie star Catherine Tyldesley.

The first series of six episodes finished in October but there are currently no plans for any more.

Actress Maggie Ollerenshaw, who played hairdresser Geraldine, revealed the news on Twitter.

She wrote: “Devastated to hear @Scarborough is not being recommissioned by the BBC. Best tv comedy I’ve ever been part of & best public response I’ve ever had to a character I’ve played.”

The BBC confirmed (via Comedy.co.uk) in a statement: “Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions to make room for new comedy on BBC One.

“We are very proud of Scarborough and would like to thank Derren and the team for all their hard work on the series.”

Others on the cast alongside Manford, Tyldesley and Ollerenshaw were Stephanie Cole, Steve Edge, Claire Sweeney, Harriet Webb and Gina Fillingham.
