Armstrong Martins surprised The X Factor 2018 judges this weekend with his take on a High School Musical hit.

Auditions for the new series were back on Saturday night on ITV.

Louis Tomlinson, Robbie Williams, Ayda Williams and Simon Cowell are back behind the judges' desk at Wembley Arena.

One of the acts we met this weekend is 23 year old youth worker and church singer Armstrong Martins.

"I had a very interesting childhood. It was very different. It was difficult," he said in Saturday's show.

Aged 13, Armstrong moved out of home and has been looked out for by his Church pastor, Toby.

"There's so much happening right now in my life," said Armstrong, "So much is going right. I'm at peace. I'm happy. I feel free. I just want to sing."

For his audition, Armstrong opted to perform High School Musical's Breaking Free.

"I am really, really looking forward to this," remarked Simon.

After the surprise song choice, the judges and crowd were all on their feet.

"You are amazing. You rock," declared Robbie.

"I had a good feeling about you and I was right, that was incredible," announced Ayda.

And Simon concluded: "I've heard so many songs over and over again. I love it when someone takes a particular song and turns it around. I think you're the one I'm going to remember today."

With four yeses, Armstrong sailed through to the next round.

This year acts need at least three or more yeses in order to make it through to the next stage, the judges' deliberation. From there they'll find out if they've made it into the six chair challenge.

More contestants in Saturday's show included Tom Richards, who first auditioned in 2010 with Louis Tomlinson, the LMA Choir, made up of singers from Liverpool who belted out This Is Me from The Greatest Showman.

The X Factor 2018 continues Sunday, September 16 at 8PM.
