Brendan Murray’s audition on The X Factor 2018 tonight didn’t go quite to plan.

Brendan is a 21-year-old Plumber from Galway, Ireland.

A former Eurovision hopeful for his native Ireland, Brendan was once a part of boy band Hometown managed by former X Factor judge Louis Walsh.

“At the age of 16 I was lucky to pursue a career in music in a boy band,” said Brendan in tonight’s show. “Our first single got to Number 1 in Ireland, our second single didn’t do as well as thought.

“Gigs kinda got scarce. That’s when we said we’ll call it a day.”

Now working as a plumber, Brendan added: “Literally all I think about when I’m at work is what I’m going to sing when I get home.

“A lot of people don’t get second chances so to be in this position is amazing. I’m hoping this starts something new.”

Brendan sang Ella Eyre’s We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off but it didn’t prove an instant hit with the panel.

Simon Cowell said: “I see an issue here. I think lyrically, that song didn’t suit your voice. I’m struggling for who your market is.”

Robbie Williams added: “You’ve got an impossibly perfect pop voice. I think you made the wrong song choice today.

Simon continued: “I have an idea what you should be singing. I’m going to suggest backstage the song you should’ve sang.

“I just think its worth pushing you a little bit more which may give you the moment I think you deserve.”

Simon suggested Brendan return with Kate Bush’s Woman’s Work.

After first struggling with the lyrics, Brendan ended up giving an “incredible” performance.

With four yeses, Brendan made it one step closer to the Six Chair Challenge.

Other acts in tonight’s episode included Olatunji Yearwood from Trinidad and Tobago who sings Calypso and Soca music and performs his own songs.

We also met Marc Higgins, a 36-year-old Firefighter at Southampton Airport who previously made judges’ houses in 2010 as part of a group, and Jacqueline Faye, a 53-year-old from Wales who sings Cilla Black’s You’re My World.

Plus, Anthony Russell returned and leaves Louis in tears.

The X Factor 2018 airs tonight at 8PM on ITV.

The show continues Saturday and Sunday nights throughout the autumn and winter.
