Created and written by screenwriter Chris Lang (Innocent, Dark Heart), the critically-acclaimed drama was back for a brand new six-part series.

But who’s on the cast, what’s season 3 all about and who was the killer?

In season 3 of Unforgotten, when the body of a teenage girl who went missing at the turn of the millennium is found at a building site off the M1 motorway, four men are placed under the spotlight and their relationships are tested to the limit.

Set across the south of England in locations including Norfolk, West Sussex, Bristol, Hampshire and London, the new series will explore how everyday lives can be fractured and destroyed by one event, showing that appearances can often be deceiving.

Unforgotten spoilers

In the first episode, when human remains were found on the central reservation of the M1, Cassie and Sunny were called to the scene.

Through the a mental plate found in the arm, which they determined was made in Cyprus, the team managed to roughly date the body which appeared to be that of a teenage girl. Trawling through the files of girls who went missing during the time frame, their search led them to Hayley Reid, a 16-year-old who went missing on the eve of the millennium.

With the original case having attracted a lot of media attention and the police never finding out what happened to her, the team must uncover who murdered Hayley.

Meanwhile, we met four men who have been friends since school: Local GP Dr Tim Finch in Hampshire, TV presenter James Hollis in London, failing salesman Pete Carr in Norfolk and artist Chris Lowe in Bristol.

They were occupants of rental house The Spinney over the millennium when Hayley went missing.

In tonight’s sixth and final episode, following discovery of items found at his house, Tim insisted that he bought the seemingly incriminating objects for his girls at a fete in Middenham during another holiday.

However the team were not buying Tim’s story and called Hayley’s twin sister Jessica and her mum in to see if the objects could be identified as Hayley’s.

When they made it clear that the possessions couldn’t be hers though, Cassie and Sunny were back to square one.

Then a new discovery left them shocked and devastated, as it was revealed the possessions in fact belonged to another murdered teen.
