Sam, who is through to Week 2 of the live shows after his debut performance last night, was handed a suspended sentence for causing actual bodily harm two years ago.

The plasterer was also fined for the offence, which apparently came about when Sam tried to intervene in a street scuffle.

“When I look back, I think, ‘What a stupid thing to get involved in’,” Sam said this weekend. “It’s something I regret entirely and I’ve grown up a lot since I met (fiancée) Emma and had my son Mason.

“Now I’m focused on my family, my career and bettering all our lives through The X Factor.”

A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper of Sam’s past: “This was a long time ago. Sam’s intention was to do the right thing by breaking up a fight but it went wrong.

“He was trying to help but unfortunately his good intentions landed him in hot water.

“He’s the first to admit it wasn’t the smartest move.”

Sam was originally booted out of The X Factor this year at the bootcamp stages before being brought back a judges’ houses when another contestant quit.

Last night he performed live for the first time, securing enough votes to make it through to the next round.

The X Factor continues Sunday night on ITV with the Overs and Groups performing.
