Louis Tomlinson has revealed he had been in line to join The X Factor judging panel last year.
The One Direction star had been in advanced talks to replace Nick Grimshaw but instead his job was given back to Louis Walsh - who will be back again this series.
In a chat with The Sun newspaper, Louis said: “It was something that I would have liked to have done. But it’s business. That’s how it works.
“It was kind of surprising to see me essentially being replaced by Louis Walsh.”
But Louis - who released new single Back To You with this week - insisted the apparat snub hasn't caused problems with boss Simon Cowell.
Louis, the only 1D member to sign solo with Simon's Syco company, went on to admit his shock after hearing about former X Factor judge Cheryl's relationship with his bandmate Liam Payne.
“I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t 100 per cent," he told the tabloid. “I’m not saying I didn’t buy it – of course I did. It was just a little bit surprising for me at first.”
Louis says he had to keep the couple's relationship a secret for weeks, recalling: “I remember being outside and sharing a cigarette with them and him being excited and trying to play it cool.
“But I’m really happy for him. I think it’s important that Liam has someone around him who’s going to really look after him."
He added: “I don’t know Cheryl too well. I’ve always thought she’s lovely, so hopefully she looks after our Liam.”
The new series of The X Factor with Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne launches soon on ITV.
