The former One Direction star first appeared on the show in 2008, getting as far as judges' houses.
Liam returned in 2010 to again sing for Cheryl although he hasn't forgot her initial reaction.
“I got a standing ovation from everyone except for Cheryl, which I thought was hilarious," Liam recalled this week.
He told Heat Radio: “She said she was having a row with Simon because he should have stood up for somebody else, so she didn’t stand up for me.
“But I’m still angry about that.”
However Cheryl still did give Liam a yes, raving at the time: "You have definitely got it, whatever it is, you have it. I thought your voice was really, really powerful.”
Fast forward seven years and now the pair are a couple who have just welcomed their first child.
“Me and Cheryl, our relationship is amazing and I put that down to her support more than anything, she’s just so great," Liam shared this week.
He told The Sun newspaper ahead of the release of his debut solo single 'Strip That Down': “Obviously I’ve just started being a dad and also I’m promoting my single and she gives me no bother about it.
“She’s like: ‘You’ve got to go out and do your job, do your job.'"
Last year, Liam and Cheryl announced that they had named their son Bear, a decision that Liam says was entirely Cheryl's.
He explained: "I said to her, ‘Look, you gave birth to him, at the end of the day you carried him around for nine months, I think you have the right to choose the name.’
“So she chose Bear because she wanted a name that when he left the room that people would always remember and I think that’s true.”
