BBC One's Reported Missing concluded tonight with the emotional search for a dementia sufferer.

It was the third and final episode of the heartbreaking BBC doc which has been shedding light on police investigations into missing people.

This evening's latest episode concerned 82-year-old Archie, who had disappeared from his home.

When Archie's son Peter checked in on his dad at home one morning as normal, he found the house empty.

Reported Missing

Suffering from advancing dementia, as well as the recent passing of his wife after 60 years of marriage, Archie had vanished - leaving no sign of where he might be.

Sergeant Barry Evans was put on the case and his first task is to work out why he had gone missing: "Has he slipped and hurt himself, and do we need to find him because he needs medical assistance?

"Or is it the case that he's taken a walk and gone too far, that he's bewildered and he doesn't know what to do? Or has somebody taken advantage of his vulnerabilities?"

As officers looked for Archie, their concerns began to grow when CCTV from a neighbour's house showed Archie had been missing for three days.

Police learned that Archie was an ex-paratrooper who had been physically fit all his life but had recently been struggling to accepting his increasing fragility.

Dementia sufferers are known to travel vast distances when they disappear, and a full-scale land, sea and air search was launched to find Archie.

Police also put calls out to the media in a bid to find any trace of Archie, prompting an initial 23 suspected sightings however these came to nothing.

But soon members of the public reported seeing Archie walking along a major road the day he went missing, leading to a search of nearby woodland.

Reported Missing

Despite having been missing for three days, Archie was found alive in bushes at the side of the road and after two weeks in hospital he was given the all clear.

The happy ending after the emotional roller-coaster of an episode hit viewers, with one reacting: "they've found Archie alive and well oh my goodness I'm in floods of tears😭😭😭 #reportedmissing"

Reported Missing aired Wednesday nights on BBC One. You can catch up with the series on BBC iPlayer.
