Nicole Scherzinger's time on The X Factor could be over for good.

While X Factor boss Simon Cowell has said he hopes to get Nicole back with Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne for this year's series, she may have other ideas.

Apparently Nicole could soon be having a wonderful time defying gravity as Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked movie.

The Sun newspaper reports this evening that the popular X Factor judge is being eyed up for the lead role in the upcoming big screen adaption of the hit musical.

Nicole is supposedly hoping to launch an acting career for herself - could that mean her leaving The X Factor?

A source said: "Nicole has held early discussions with film bosses who think she’s perfect for the role of Elphaba.

“She’s been eyeing a career in acting for some time now, so playing the lead role in a such a popular musical would be a major coup."

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror newspaper last month, Nicole confirmed she had been asked back to The X Factor this year but hadn't decided to say yes just yet.

She declared: "I don't know yet. We’ll see."

Nicole went on: "I might [be back on X Factor]. But I want to get back to creating. Last year I did a lot of TV and I loved it, but I didn’t spend time with the artist in me.

"The idea of doing that excites me more than anything."

Although no judges have been confirmed for The X Factor 2017, Simon said this month he didn't want to make any changes.

"I don’t think for the moment we’d want to make any changes," he explained. “It worked on X Factor last year and the Britain’s Got Talent panel works really well."

The X Factor 2017 will air on ITV in the autumn.
