Kris Marshall has been unofficially revealed as the new Doctor Who, according to reports.

Although the BBC has NOT confirmed the identity of the new Doctor, it's been claimed that former My Family star Kris Marshall will replace Peter Capaldi.

Peter's final series as Doctor Who kicked off on BBC One last night with 4.6 million viewers watching the latest episode.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper of Peter's replacement: "Kris Marshall has already joined the cast and will regenerate at the end of this series, not in the Christmas special."

It comes despite bookies making Phoebe Waller-Bridge the favourite for the gig, potentially making for the first woman Doctor.

But the source alleged: "They won’t risk a woman Doctor. They want a David Tennant type.”

A spokesperson for the BBC denied the report, insisting: "No casting decisions have yet been made on series 11."

Fans have been reacting to the potential leak and reaction has been mixed.

"BTW if Kris Marshall is the next doctor i will be done with this show #DoctorWho" one unhappy viewer wrote.

However another raved: "Please tell me these unconfirmed reports about #KrisMarshall being the next @bbcdoctorwho true!! It would be amazing if it is!"

Another took to Twitter to comment: "Whovians: 'Kris Marshall as The Doctor? No! He will be awful' Other times I heard that: David Tennant, Matt Smith. How did they work out?"

For now, Peter Capaldi returns as the Doctor next Saturday night on BBC One.
