Vera opened up to big viewing figures on ITV last night.

The new four part series kicked off between 8PM and 10PM, winning a big audience of 6.5 million.


The number is up a million viewers on its previous series opener and one of the show's best ratings ever.

The show one its slot but couldn't quite top the night's ratings.

Over on BBC One it was Countryfile that won the evening with 6.9 million viewers, beating Antiques Roadshow's 4.9 million.

Drama SS-GB continued to limp through its series at 9PM with 2.5 million viewers, now down over 3.5 million viewers on the 6.1 million who tuned in for the first episode last month.

On BBC Two, the new series of Robot Wars and Top Gear both topped on last week,down 100,000 and 400,000 viewers respectively to 1.2 million and 2.4 million.

Earlier on ITV, Phillip Schofield's new game show 5 Gold Rings continued with 2.8 million viewers - up 200,000 on last weekend.
