X Factor 2016 winner Matt Terry has brushed off the fact that he wasn't signed by Simon Cowell.

Matt won the show in 2016, beating Saara Aalto to victory.

But while Simon signed a number of acts from the show - including Honey G and 5 After Midnight - Matt wasn't one of them.

Instead, he's partnered up with RCA Records to put out his winner's album.

Speaking last year, Matt insisted he didn't mind.

"Each label suits an artist differently,” he said. “We just felt RCA would suit me better as they have put amazing people out there such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys and Olly Murs."

Matt continued: “However, Simon said if I ever needed him, I could speak to him.

“He’s a lovely guy.

“Simon gave me this amazing opportunity so I’ll always be grateful to him.”

Meanwhile, speaking to the Aberdeen Evening Express, Matt revealed how he remains close to mentor Nicole Scherzinger and loved his time with her on the show last year.

Matt said: “Nicole made me feel like I can go to her with anything I need.

“She was very hands on. She helped me out with everything.

“I feel that I definitely hit the jackpot with her.”

Matt's debut album Trouble was released last autumn.
