Helena Bonham Carter and Tom Burke to lead new BBC drama

The BBC has announced California Avenue, a brand-new six-part drama from BAFTA-winning writer-director Hugo Blick, the creative mind behind The English and The Honourable Woman.

Set to premiere on BBC One and iPlayer, the series will star acting heavyweights Bill Nighy and Helena Bonham Carter, alongside Erin Doherty and Tom Burke.

This time, Blick turns his lens to the English countryside, where a hidden canal-side caravan park becomes the stage for a deeply personal story filled with humour, heart and healing.

Erin Doherty plays Lela, a woman on the run with her 11-year-old child, arriving in a quiet, off-grid community where she hopes to find refuge. But her arrival brings more than just disruption — it sparks reconnections, confrontations, and unexpected love.

Bill Nighy and Helena Bonham Carter star as Jerry and Eddie, Lela’s estranged parents, who must reckon with their past as their fractured family begins to piece itself back together.

Tom Burke co-stars as Cooper, a local outcast and showman.

Set in the 1970s, California Avenue is described as a story of precious relationships, buried secrets and second chances.

The show is being produced by Drama Republic, the team behind One Day and Doctor Foster, and marks another collaboration between Blick, Drama Republic, Eight Rooks, and the BBC.

Filming begins later this summer in and around Hertfordshire.

California Avenue will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer in 2026.
