The Queen’s funeral watched by more than 25 million viewers

A peak audience of more than 25 million viewers watched the Queen’s funeral on Monday.

Coverage of the ceremony aired across most channels with BBC One, BBC Two and ITV broadcasts creating a combined peak of 25.3 million viewers at shortly after 12PM.

An average audience of 12.3 million watched BBC One’s coverage all day from 8AM to 5PM.

The funeral also aired across ITV’s digital channels – ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and ITVBe – as well as across the Sky network.

Further viewers watched online streams or at outdoor big screens, not included in the numbers.

The viewing figures are some of the biggest in UK history – although didn’t manage to beat the peak audience of 31 million who watched the Euro 2020 final last summer.

More than 32 million watched Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 while over 27 million tuned into Boris Johnson’s statement on the pandemic in 2020.

Not all channels decided to air the funeral with BBC’s CBBC and CBeebies airing their regular schedule.

Channel 4 aired a number of documentaries about the Queen’s life and reign while Channel 5 broadcast the films including The Emoji Movie and Stuart Little.
