Soap legend Shane, who plays Alfie Moon, will begin filming next month according to reports.

It will follow his on-screen wife Kat Slater, played by Jessie Wallace, making her comeback in tonight’s episode.

The pair last year appeared in EastEnders spin-off Redwater but now both are making a return to Walford.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “With Kat’s comeback the writers knew viewers would ask when Alfie would be back too, so they’ve managed to convince Shane to return.

“It won’t be long-term but he’ll play a role in a number of storylines in the coming months.”

Alfie recently spoke of a potential return in a chat on ITV’s Lorraine.

He said: “You know what, at the moment, I have no plans to go back to Albert Square.

“John Yorke, who’s brought back the Slaters and then there’s another new character starting…

“Listen, I’m no good at saying no comment, so I always say if I’m asked, I’d love to but it would have to be the right storyline.”

He went on: “Jessie said, ‘I’m missing you being there,’ and who knows, maybe down the line there might be a story for Alfie to go back, but right now I’ve got no plans to go back.”

EastEnders airs on BBC One.
