Former 'Eastenders' actress Laurie Brett set to play a character in the next series of 'Waterloo Road'

Laurie Brett, best known for her role as well-loved character Jane Beale on BBC1 soap Eastenders is set to play an English teacher in the next series of highly successful BBC1 school-based drama series Waterloo Road.

Brett who made her final appearance as well-loved Jane in January of this year is set to play Scottish-born Christine Mulgrew, who is appointed by headmaster Michael Byrne (Alec Newman) when the school moves to Scotland for its' eighth series.

Brett who recently got through to the final of Let's Dance For Sports Relief with her performance of Lady Gaga and Beyonce's 'Telephone' alongside former co-star Tameka Empson said of her upcoming role: "I am thrilled to be joining Waterloo Road. I have watched it on and off from the start as my good friend Jill Halfpenny was in the first series.''

She added: ''The character I will be playing is such a complex woman, with many issues, and it will be a real departure from what people are used to seeing me do. Not least because for the first time in my career I will be working in my native accent which I am really excited about."
